Chicago Architecture Biennial education materials

My worlds and interests collided in the best way for this project, as I got to support the Chicago Architecture Biennial’s Youth Engagement Programs with visuals - illustration, character design, and motion graphics - for their work of making urban planning and design ideas accessible to empower young people within their communities to reimagine what our city and neighborhoods could be.

My illustrations were used in the Chicago Architecture Biennial’s The Available City Curriculum Toolkit as inspiration to accompany the prompts for young designers.

Student Ideas Competition
promo video

The Chicago Architecture Biennial organizes a Student Ideas Competition to inspire young people to explore the world of design and architecture. As a way to promote the competition, I was hired to make a motion graphics video for the Biennial website and on social media.

I worked with the existing brand colors of the Student Ideas Competition to create minimal illustrated and graphic elements. The motion concept played with the grid (a reference to Chicago Architecture Biennial’s brand identity) - elements sliding and shifting in time - to create a rhythmic and punchy visual effect.

virtual field trip imagery

To bring the Biennial experience to students and classrooms in pandemic times, the Education Team developed Virtual Field Trips with a live teacher. I was invited to create a character - a learning buddy - and other visual stimuli that could be used in virtual presentations to add liveliness and joy.

These are my sketches and mock-ups of character designs.

Below are the finished assets that were delivered to be used in Virtual Field Trip visuals.
